THE VOICE OF GAGARIN
- December 14th to 19th 2009

A read exhibition, based on a selection of texts from Gagarin.
Staged by Grégory Castéra.
In partnership with GAGAvzw, and Komplot.

Several readers - poets, critics, curators, dancers, musicians, etc. - are invited to choose a text in the collection of Gagarin and to read it aloud. Gagarin is dedicated to the publication of original texts of artists from all around the world working nowadays. These texts are published in their original language and in English. Created in 2000, Gagarin has published 19 issues. An exhibition of the whole collection of Gagarin will be organized at the S.M.A.K in Ghent from the 4th of December 2009 to the 14th of March 2010.

The oral reading of a text originally written for silent reading doesn't consist in a simple transposition from text to speech. To transmit the text, the reader must do many choices: rhythm, insistence on some words, the way to address someone, tone of the voice, etc. These choices, as much as they allow to understand the text better, change its understanding. We usually assign two meanings to the word “reading”: the communication of a text and its understanding. Also, more than a simple exercise, reading a text of an artist would necessarily be an adaptation that could need to precise, for instance, the way to read, the addition of documentation, furniture and props, etc.

This exhibition presents texts of Gagarin as well as it organizes in the same space different apparatus dedicated to oral reading.
